Summary

From a New York Times best-selling author, psychotherapist, and national advice columnist, a hilarious, thought-provoking, and surprising new book that takes us behind the scenes of a therapist's world -- where her patients are looking for answers (and so is she)。

One day, Lori Gottlieb is a therapist who helps patients in her Los Angeles practice。 The next, a crisis causes her world to come crashing down。 Enter Wendell, the quirky but seasoned therapist in whose office she suddenly lands。 With his balding head, cardigan, and khakis, he seems to have come straight from Therapist Central Casting。 Yet he will turn out to be anything but。

As Gottlieb explores the inner chambers of her patients' lives -- a self-absorbed Hollywood producer, a young newlywed diagnosed with a terminal illness, a senior citizen threatening to end her life on her birthday if nothing gets better, and a twenty-something who can't stop hooking up with the wrong guys -- she finds that the questions they are struggling with are the very ones she is now bringing to Wendell。

With startling wisdom and humor, Gottlieb invites us into her world as both clinician and patient, examining the truths and fictions we tell ourselves and others as we teeter on the tightrope between love and desire, meaning and mortality, guilt and redemption, terror and courage, hope and change。

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is revolutionary in its candor, offering a deeply personal yet universal tour of our hearts and minds and providing the rarest of gifts: a boldly revealing portrait of what it means to be human, and a disarmingly funny and illuminating account of our own mysterious lives and our power to transform them。

Great story woven into a great view into therapy! I hope this book helps to de-stigmatize therapy and the importance of mental health。

This is an exceptional read。 A reminder of the courage it takes to be a forgiving, loving, gentle, and most importantly (flawed!!) human in this crazy world we all share。

One of the single best reads regarding mental health, therapy, and how hard but fulfilling therapy work can be for both the client and therapist。 One of the best reads I've read in a very long time。 One of the single best reads regarding mental health, therapy, and how hard but fulfilling therapy work can be for both the client and therapist。 One of the best reads I've read in a very long time。 。。。more

I enjoyed the various stories and her description of her role as a therapist。 I did get a little tired of it three-quarters of the way through and put it down for a bit。 That might have been because I had several books come in from the library at the same time。 Will pick it up again。。。。。。。。

4。5 starswhat an absolute delight。 i loved the insight into a therapist's world and mindset, and i loved each of the individual patients' stories。 this book didn't make me sob, it was just a constant state of misty eyes and the occasional tear。 i don't usually read memoirs, but the blend of personal anecdotes, patient anecdotes, and psychology juggled my attention perfectly。 4。5 starswhat an absolute delight。 i loved the insight into a therapist's world and mindset, and i loved each of the individual patients' stories。 this book didn't make me sob, it was just a constant state of misty eyes and the occasional tear。 i don't usually read memoirs, but the blend of personal anecdotes, patient anecdotes, and psychology juggled my attention perfectly。 。。。more

Beautifully written。 Explores the nuances of lives in a realistic fashion。 Not to preachy but ends up giving you few nuggets of wisdom

Enjoyable, well written, interesting people/vignettes - several parts made me tear up, too。3 because it seemed a bit too self-promotional and self-centered… which may be the point。 I didn’t like that tone though。

This is a wonderful book that I fully enjoyed。 I was entertained as much as I was informed。 I got more information from this book than I think the author intended to give。 I feel so privileged that I got to read this book and I'm super glad I did, I forever would be。 Lori Gottlieb completely won my heart with this one。 This is a wonderful book that I fully enjoyed。 I was entertained as much as I was informed。 I got more information from this book than I think the author intended to give。 I feel so privileged that I got to read this book and I'm super glad I did, I forever would be。 Lori Gottlieb completely won my heart with this one。 。。。more

By far my favorite book of 2021。 Borrowed the copy I read so I think it’s time to purchase my own copy and let the highlighting and note-taking ensue。

Concept was genius: A therapist telling her stories through her patients/clients and in parallel her own journey with therapy。 As I reader I appreciated getting a view behind the curtain, realizing how therapists are human, too, and struggle to say the right thing / keep their own experiences out of their work。 Most importantly, I thought Lori did a wonderful job explaining and analyzing different mental health blockers in an engaging and eye-opening way。

As a student therapist myself, I found this book to be just…really profound。 I read it as an e-book, but I’ve realized I need a hard copy so I can annotate it and use it in my clinical practice。 I found it especially interesting (likely purposeful) that, as the book went along, the author revealed more and more information- not unlike many clients who often reveal more intimate details of themselves as they get more comfortable。 Psychology books can be hit or miss for me but this one is right on As a student therapist myself, I found this book to be just…really profound。 I read it as an e-book, but I’ve realized I need a hard copy so I can annotate it and use it in my clinical practice。 I found it especially interesting (likely purposeful) that, as the book went along, the author revealed more and more information- not unlike many clients who often reveal more intimate details of themselves as they get more comfortable。 Psychology books can be hit or miss for me but this one is right on target, and no doubt one of my favorites。 I was really impacted by this book, and I will carry it with me through my own practice, and my own therapy for that matter。 You absolutely do not need to be a therapist to enjoy this book, I highly recommend。 。。。more

This book was so necessary。 I have never really had an opinion on therapy but this made me feel so good (about therapy and just life in general lmao)。 The particular situations the author discusses plus her own personal experiences cover such a huge range of topics and feel so raw and important to you as the reader。 I loved!!!!

Rebecca Srour

I know this took me literally a year to read but that has nothing to do with the quality of the book。 This book is one of the most spectacular books I’ve ever read。 It was thought provoking, realistic, heartwarming, relatable… must I go on? It made me think about my own thought processes and choices of coping as well as who I am as a student studying psychology。 Yes yes yes please read。

Carol Fordahl

This was readable, engaging, insightful and downright helpful。 It gives an inside look at the therapist’s side of the couch and it is daunting。 The author showed us her humanity in a way that didn’t belittle her skills。 It was so well done, I was sad when she slapped her knees twice and said our time was up。

Amelia

I loved this memoir + reflection on therapy! I’d read it again。 So many salient snippets。 Makes me want to become a clinical mental health worker and start seeing patients?? Also beautiful unfolding personal story, along with the life lessons。

Cristiano Franco

Helen

So good! I truly think I learned more therapeutic techniques from this book than any other! Thank you friend, for this awesome birthday gift!

This started slow, but I’m glad I stuck with it because I ended up loving it。 I got so attached to the clients and therapists。 I thought she did a great job of weaving real life and therapy together into a narrative that made me want to keep reading! *some language, quite a few f words

I picked this up on a whim and couldn’t finish it。I see why her boyfriend broke up with her lol

Another one it took me quite a while to get through but such an incredibly well woven story。 As someone who values therapy as an integral part of my life this was such a unique mix of perspectives and story lines。 There is a lot of fluff but looking beyond that you encounter each character’s journey through therapy & it’s effects on their lives。 Really interesting!

Really enjoyed this book。 It was “entertaining” and reflective at the same time。 Helped me further normalize my views on therapy。 The stories she shared made it difficult to put the book down!

A book that made me laugh and cry, and think deeply about humanity。 Just what I needed in the moment。

Real and warmThere is a lot of authenticity within these pages。 We are all human and this book highlights ways in which we can all relate to one another。 It also encourages us to allow ourselves to exist imperfectly while trying to improve our mental, social and emotional lives。
